The Island Nature Trust is seeking nominations for the 2019 Hon. J. Angus MacLean Natural Areas Award.

Individuals or groups that have made a significant and lasting difference in increasing or improving natural areas across P.E.I. may be nominated for this prestigious annual award, named in honour of the former premier and conservationist.

“Our organization grew out of a grassroots movement, to become the first land trust on the Island. Every year, we want to recognize others who also strive for outstanding Island conservation successes,” said Judi Allen, president of the board of directors.

Guidelines for nominations and a full list of past recipients are available from the Island Nature Trust. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Aug. 23. The award will be presented at Island Nature Trust’s annual general meeting on Sept. 19.

In addition to MacLean in 1990, some previous winners include Edward and Agnes Laughlin for donating their 20acre property at Foley’s Pond in Kildare and Randy Dibblee for spearheading the mapping of wetlands with scores based on wildlife values for P.E.I.

Nominations should include a brief biography of the nominee and a clear outline of their work to protect or manage natural areas on P.E.I. The nature trust asks for as much detail as possible to allow the awards committee to make a fully-informed selection.

Many Islanders feel a deep connection with their land and have made a thoughtful decision to keep it in its natural state. There are also many groups throughout the Island that have put in countless hours improving and protecting natural areas.
