Brady Arsenault shuts down Clippers in KCBL action

Cardigan’s Tyler Johnston threw a no-hitter Sunday as the Grant Thornton Tigers shut out the Northside Gill Constructi­on Brewers 9-0 in Kings County Baseball League action at Memorial Field.

He struck out five and walked two in the seven-inning game. Nigel Fisher allowed eight runs, including six unearned, on five hits in three innings in taking the loss. He struck out two and walked four. Eric Anderson allowed a run on two hits and six walks in three innings of relief while striking out a pair.

Jordan Duffy went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, a walk, an RBI, a run and a stolen base to lead the Tigers’ offence. Ben Ladner was 2-for-4 with a single, a double, three RBI and two runs.

Elijah Hood and Park Gallant each added a single and an RBI while Bret Cheverie also drove in a run.

The Tigers defeated the Brewers 5-2 earlier this month with Johnston earning the win and Fisher being tagged with the loss as both pitchers went the distance.

Johnston allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one. Fisher allowed five runs on 11 hits and six walks while striking out four.

Jeremy Koughan and Cheverie were each 3-for-4 for the Tigers with Cheverie driving in two runs and having the lone extra-base hit, a double, of the game. Kris McGuirk, Ladner, Johnny Savidant, Spencer Montgomery and Ryan Ladner each had a single in the win.

Fisher and Seth Nicholson each went 1-for-3 and scored a run while Nicholson added an RBI. Nick Ryan and Jayden MacLean had the other singles. MacLean also drove in a run.

CHEVIES 11, SELECTS 2 SELECTS 5, CHEVIES 4

The Morell Chevies and the P.E.I. Youth Selects split a recent Kings County Baseball League doublehead­er at Memorial Field.

The Chevies won the opener 11-2 before the Selects rallied for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Darcy Affleck threw a complete game victory for the Chevies in Game 1, striking out five and allowing four hits.

Matt Barlow and Jarrod Laybolt each had three hits to pace the Chevies, with Laybolt driving in four runs. Logan Gallant, Scott Ellsworth and Stephen O’Shea each added two hits.

Nolan Ryan had a pair of hits for the Selects, with Tyler Taylor and Tyler Jones adding the others.

In the nightcap, the Selects used three pitchers to limit the Chevies to four runs, with Ben Tsai giving way to eventual winner Ben MacDougall. Taylor would pick up the save.

Taylor Larkin suffered the loss, going the distance and striking out 12 while allowing five hits.

Duncan Picketts led the Selects at the plate with a pair of hits and three RBI, including the deciding two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 4-3 Chevy lead. Jack MacKenzie reached base twice and scored a pair of runs for the Selects.

Scott Harper and Laybolt had two hits to pace the Chevies.

ATHLETICS 6, CLIPPERS 1

The Alley Stratford Athletics defeated the Cardigan Clippers 6-1 Sunday in Kings County Baseball League action in Cardigan.

Brady Arsenault went six strong innings to earn the win while Corey Dougay pitched the seventh to close it out. Isaac Macneil took the loss with relief from Jack Mackenzie.

Jonathan Arsenault, Shawn Macdougall and Randy Taylor each had two hits to pace Stratford’s attack. The Clippers were led by Sam Mackenzie, who was 2-for-3.
