YOUNG, (Richard Wayne)”Rick”

-

Died suddenly on August 2, 2019, in his 74th year. Rick was a sweet, funny, gentle man whose good-natured humour endeared him to others. He was happiest when spending time with his family and his many friends, who found it easy to be with such a dear man. His early years in the Annapolis Valley were notable not only for childhood fun he had, but also for his participation in Scouts. Rick was one of 2 representatives of Nova Scotia chosen to attend the 11th World Scout Jamboree held in Greece, in 1963. From a young age, Rick embodied the values of care, cooperation, integrity and respect which served him well in his adult life. He claimed to learn some of this from curling, playing on a Schoolboy team that qualified for Provincial Finals. After studying architecture at Acadia and NS Tech (TUNS), Rick left the field to join the civil service, a decision he made for the good of his family. This took them across Nova Scotia, to Charlottetown, PEI, and back to Halifax. While he helped create the field of Tourism Development even as he and his colleagues struggled to define what it was, his priority was the family he created with his departed wife, Liz (née Elizabeth Trenouth). As with all his endeavours, Rick took his roles as husband and father seriously without being too serious, making lots of room for fun along the way. In work and in his personal life he did not make it his goal to stand out, but everyone who knew him knew that he was outstanding in the ways he made people feel in his presence. A peacemaker and problem-solver by nature, he focused more on what was good, and less on what is difficult, doing so with a grin and a twinkle in his eye. Rick is survived by his sons Shawn Young (Svetlana Forlova) of Halifax, NS and Matthew Rippeyoung of Ottawa, ON, as well as by his grandsons, Max and Jack Rippeyoung. He is also survived by his 5 siblings and their families, most of whom live in Nova Scotia, still. A memorial for family and friends to celebrate Rick’s life will be organized in October, with details to follow. For online condolences please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
