A P.E.I. man who had cocaine and more than 200 methamphetamine pills in his vehicle when the police arrested him after he was caught driving while prohibited was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison.

Andrew James Myers, 39, appeared before Justice Terri MacPherson in P.E.I. Supreme Court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to possessing cocaine and possessing methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.

Reading from an agreed statement of facts, federal Crown attorney Sean Seviour told the court that on July 3, 2018, an RCMP officer on patrol saw Myers driving a Cadillac SUV, despite being prohibited from doing so.

Myers fled, but the police found him later.

In the vehicle, the police found a mix of drugs in bags and bottles, including more than 200 methamphetamine pills, a few Dilaudid, a variety of undetermined pills and more than eight grams of cocaine.

Myers was initially scheduled to be sentenced in May but didn’t show up for court.

He was at large until his arrest in July.

In his submissions, Seviour said a lengthy period in custody was appropriate, and he told the court the Crown and defence were making a joint recommendation of two years in prison.

Defence lawyer Brendan Hubley said the joint recommendation was within the range usually given in P.E.I. for similar offences.

Myers, who sat at the defence table throughout the proceedings, declined to address the court.

After hearing all of the submissions, MacPherson accepted the joint recommendation, saying it was a fit and proper sentence given the circumstances.

Along with the jail time, Myers will be subject to a 10year weapons prohibition, he must provide a DNA sample for the national databank and he will forfeit all of the items the police seized that were related to the offences.

Myers is still facing several charges in provincial court where his next appearance is scheduled for Aug. 19.
