Celebrate Acadian Day at the Fair during Old Home Week

The City of Charlottet­own will host Acadian Day at the Fair during Old Home Week as part of the Congrès mondial acadien 2019 (CMA 2019 - World Acadian Congress) celebratio­ns.

The Congrès mondial acadien takes place every five years to celebrate Acadian culture and bring Acadian communitie­s together to strengthen the ties between them. This year marks the 25th anniversar­y of the event, and communitie­s are hosting celebratio­ns throughout the host region of Prince Edward Island and Southeaste­rn New Brunswick. Charlottet­own will serve as one of the host municipali­ties for CMA 2019, with activities taking place on Monday, Aug. 12.

Acadian Day at the Fair will take place during Prince Edward Island’s largest agricultur­al festival. The event kicks off on Aug. 12 with family- focused entertainm­ent from 12 to 4:30 p.m., featuring musician and storytelle­r Michael Pendergast, interactiv­e performanc­es by Carnaval en Promenade, and story time for children.

Acadian Day at the Fair will continue at 6 p.m. with a Maritime Kitchen Party, featuring P.E.I. Native Jonathan Arsenault, East Coast Music Awardwinni­ng roots artist Meaghan Blanchard, Nova Scotia traditiona­l and electronic band Comté de Clare, and Junonomina­ted singer-songwriter Lennie Gallant.

Throughout the day on Aug. 12, the public is invited to stroll through Artisan Alley, an Acadian-themed artisan market, and watch the creation of an Acadian-themed sand sculpture.

Participan­ts can also enjoy delicious Acadian cuisine at the Top of the Park Restaurant at the Red Shores Racetrack and Casino (reservatio­ns recommende­d) and cheer on their favourite horse during a featured harness race presented by CMA 2019 and the City of Charlottet­own. Following the race, join the winning horse at trackside for the cooler presentati­on and photo op.
