Grandma says ‘too much of a good thing, is not always a good thing’

August… it sure got off to a lovely start. I hesitate to mention this, but it is the last month of meteorological summer. Grandma has a few things to say about August, as you can imagine.

The first is true for every month – and that is “le trois fait the mois.” The weather we experience on the third day of the month is a snapshot for the month ahead.

Because I can’t remember what I had for breakfast, I thought we could use a refresher. Here’s what it was like on Aug. 3.

New Brunswick: Sunny and very warm.

Mainland Nova Scotia: Sunny and warm, not humid.

Cape Breton: Sunny and warm

Prince Edward Island: Sunny, windy and warm

Western Newfoundland: Partly sunny and warm

Labrador: Partly sunny and warm

So, it looks like we’re all set as meteorological summer winds down. Winter, on the other hand, might be a different story.

Grandma also took note of the weather during the first full week of August. She believed, "If the first week in August it unusually warm, the coming winter

will be snowy and long." Yikes! I spent most of the first week of the month in Newfoundland and boy was it nice… unusually warm to say the least! Record high temperatures tumbled all across the island. If Grandma is correct, perhaps I should visit this winter… I do love snow!

As for the Maritime Provinces, it was warm, too; on average, temperatures were a couple of degrees above normal.

During my travels last week, I spoke to quite a few locals and, of course, the topic of weather always came up. When I commented on how incredible the weather had been since I landed in St. John’s, without exception they said, “Careful, we will pay for this … come winter.”

Only time will tell.
