Cameron to coach ’Canes

Holland College women’s squad to play in newly formed league

The Holland College Hurricanes women’s hockey team makes a return in 2019 with Jess Cameron behind the bench.

The Mount Mellick native brings a wealth of hockey experience to the Hurricanes, having coached through many camps and clinics such as Andrews Hockey Growth Programs, the Hockey P.E.I. Program of Excellence and Extra Edge.

She recently served as an assistant coach of the North Halton Twisters, an elite midget team in North Halton, Ont., and currently serves as the director of women’s hockey for Neutral Zone Hockey, a scouting service of university and college prospects in North America.

“I am excited to join the Hurricanes this season,” she said. “The opportunit­y to work with student-athletes at the collegiate level presents an exciting next step in my involvemen­t with hockey. I look forward to being a part of a program and league with great growth potential.”

Cameron played four seasons with the Vermont-based Castleton University Spartans of the National Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (NCAA). In 2016, she was named a CCM all-American goaltender, the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) goaltender of the year, the Castleton University female athlete of the year, Castleton University women’s hockey MVP and the Sport P.E.I. intercolle­giate female athlete of the year.

Cameron spent her minor hockey years as a member of the Pownal Red Devils before playing at the Warner Hockey School in Alberta and the Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.

coach. She is an accomplish­ed collegiate player, she knows hockey and she has coaching experience. I feel she has a lot to offer our student-athletes and our program.”

The Hurricanes used to play in the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League, but it ceased operations for 2018-19.

The ‘Canes join the Acadia Axewomen, Cape Breton Capers and UNBSJ Seawolves in the newly formed Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Associatio­n (ACHA). Teams will play a 16-game regular season schedule with an Atlantic championsh­ip hosted by the Hurricanes from March 6-8, 2020.

The ‘Canes will open up their regular season on Nov. 9 when they host the Acadia Axewomen.
