Reception to promote the Irish language

-

The Benevolent Irish Society is hosting a reception at the Edward Whelan Cultural Centre today at 7:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning the Irish language.

A course is currently being offered at UPEI and is intended for people with no proficiency in the language. It provides an introduction through a study of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. It also includes oral drills, frequent written exercises, short oral presentations and simple readings.

Introduction to Irish Gaelic is open to all people interested in learning the basics. Seniors may register for free, and auditors are welcome to take the course for free with permission of the instructor. Students wishing to take the course for credit toward their degree must register through normal channels at UPEI.

The course is taught by Gormlaith Maynes from Drogheda in Co. Louth, Ireland. She completed her undergraduate degree in education at Dublin City University and her masters degree in traditional Irish music performance from the University of Limerick. Returning to UPEI for a second year, Gormlaith’s position is sponsored by the Ireland Canada University Foundation (Dublin).

Representatives from UPEI will be present to assist in registration. In addition to light refreshments, Gormlaith will play a few tunes on her concertina.

The Benevolent Irish Society is located at 582 North River Rd., Charlottetown. For information about the event at the BIS, contact John Flood (john@ penumbrapress.com). For information about the course at UPEI, contact Neb Kujundzic (nkujundzic@upei.ca) or Maynes (gormlaithupei@gmail.com).
