Classes begin Sept. 11
Heritage Social Dance Group meets at Beaconsfield Carriage House
The social committee of the Heritage Social Dance Group at Beaconsfield met recently to discuss its plans for the fall session of dance classes.
The group focuses on Scottish country, English country, quadrilles and round dances that are from set dancing traditions popular during the 18th and 19th centuries and are still danced around the world today.
Many of the formations in these dances are related to those in Acadian square sets as well as square dancing but have their own style and music. Fans of shows like “Downton Abbey”, “Jane Austen” and “The Queen” series would recognize some of the dances.
New dancers are welcome to join group members at Beaconsfield Carriage House for Wednesday evening classes. A partner is not required but is always appreciated.
The dance formations may seem overwhelming in the beginning, but the instructors will guide participants through. If there is enough interest, there may be time devoted each evening specifically for new dancers.
Each evening will consist of simple dances that include basic steps and formations as well as more complex dances and formations.
In early December there is a dance party which features a program of favourite dances from the autumn classes. The group also entertains at senior residences throughout the province and recently led dances at a ceilidh for Glenaladale.
Weekly evening classes will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 7-9 p.m., at Beaconsfield Carriage House in Charlottetown. No previous dance experience is needed. All are welcome.
