JEERS: To the provincial Department of Highways for deciding that morning rush hour was a good time to shut down one of the lanes on Riverside Drive, blocking traffic coming off the Hillsborough Bridge into Charlottetown on Sept. 4. Traffic was backed up in both lanes across the bridge as far back as the Sobeys in Stratford. Not only did it make some people almost an hour late for work but it was also the first day for UPEI and Holland College students. Surely a better time or even day could have been picked.
CHEERS: To the people who spent all or part of their summer working or helping out with children’s camps here on P.E.I. From sports camps, day camps and specialized health camps to veterinary camps, church camps and everything in between, chances are you were more than just an employee or a volunteer — you were likely also a friend, a coach, a mentor, a role model or a teacher. With kids now back to school across the Island, pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
CHEERS: To Jimmy Carruthers, Myron Taylor and Michael Delaney, who are organizing the Hamilton Heritage Day event on Saturday, Sept. 14. These three friends feel strongly about traditional farming practices and they want to share their information with the next generation. They also think of others. That’s because funds raised from this event at civic numbers 2509 and 2556 in Hamilton from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. will go to the organization Farmers Helping Farmers.
JEERS: To the drunk drivers who continue to plague Island roads putting other motorists at risk with their reckless behaviour. In the last two weeks, judges in Charlottetown sentenced about a dozen people on drunk driving-related offences, which doesn’t include charges dealt with in Summerside or Georgetown. The most serious case saw a young man learn a hard lesson after he was involved in an accident that injured two people. During his sentencing, the court heard the accused expressed remorse and said he thinks about the accident every day. It was an easily avoidable lesson that others should learn from and consider before getting the behind the wheel after drinking.
