FAN-GIRLING
It’s the final season for some show favourites
The returning TV shows Keely Turner is most looking forward to this fall.
I’ve survived the summer – the heat, the insects, and all of my favourite television shows being on hiatus. Here are some of my favourite returning shows and new releases set for September.
“HELLO, PRIVILEGE, IT’S ME, CHELSEA” (SEPT. 13)
A Netflix documentary that follows comedian, Chelsea Handler, as she explores how white privilege impacts American culture. Chelsea has already had a successful Netflix docuseries “Chelsea Does” that I thought was funny, educational, thoughtful and authentic so I’ll be adding “Hello, Privilege, It’s Me, Chelsea” to My List on Netflix.
“UNBELIEVABLE” (SEPT. 13)
A Netflix original that investigates a rape allegation through an eight-episode miniseries. The show is a recreation of a true story that took place in Washington in 2008 and was later covered in an article written by T. Christian Miler and Kem Armstrong in 2016 that won a Pulitzer Price. Unbelievable is sure to be an emotional, challenging and important watch.
“BETWEEN TWO FERNS: THE MOVIE” (SEPT. 20)
As the trailer states, “What started as a show on the internet is now a big Hollywood movie”. Zach Galifianakas takes his hilarious (rude and quirky) talk show on the road as he interviews high profile celebrities and attempts to restore his reputation. The movie includes appearances by Will Ferrell, Matthew McConaughey, Tiffany Haddish, Brie Larson, Keanu Reeves, Chrissy Teigen and 13 others. I will follow Zach Galifianakas wherever he goes (in a spiritual, supportive sense, not in an admission of stalking).
“THIS IS US” (SEPT. 24)
Season 4 of This Is Us starts Sept. 24. I feel like a failure and a fraud admitting it but I do not watch “This Is Us”. I started the first season and I liked it! I was three or four episodes deep and I realized the emotional intensity and focus the show would require from me and I switched back to watching Bon Appetit’s YouTube series and the Instagram stories of former “Bachelor” constants. Maybe someday I’ll be ready to binge cry my way through all seasons but I knew this information was valuable to most emotionally-stable people so I included it.
“MODERN FAMILY” (SEPT. 25)
Sept. 25 is the beginning of the end as the eleventh and final season of “Modern Family” airs. Follow the lives of Phil and Claire Dunphy and their extended family through
progressive story lines and many laughs.
“THE GOOD PLACE” (SEPT. 26)
The fourth and final season of “The Good Place” begins this fall. Created by Michael Schur (“The Office”, “Parks and Recreation”), the show explores philosophy and the afterlife through humour. It stars Kristen Bell (I will support anything she does – I even bought baby wipes she made and I have exactly zero babies), Ted Danson and Jameela Jamil.
“GREY’S ANATOMY” SEPT. 26)
The longest running primetime medical drama (a very specific award) is back for a sixteenth season on Sept. 26. Follow the lives and careers of fictional surgeons as they take on emergencies, life changing research, and romance. Does anyone else get increasingly paranoid that they have a rare disease with each passing season? Asking for myself.
