Seniors group looks for volunteers to help with Dorian clean-up

Summerside streets still barricaded, power out in some areas

-

SUMMERSIDE — A number of streets in Summerside were still barricaded mid-week following post-tropical storm Dorian over the weekend.

Clean-up efforts are ongoing around the city and crews continue to work at restoring power to a number of areas still in the dark.

Streets still barricaded Wednesday included Poplar Avenue, Beaver Street and Hanover Street.

Areas without power included Beaver Street, Court Street, part of Sunshine Trailer Park, Mill Crescent, Poplar Avenue and Oak Street.

Meanwhile , the East Prince Senior’s Initiative is looking to connect volunteers with seniors in need of assistance with storm cleanup.

Contact EPSI at 902-888-2177 if you are able to lend a hand, or if you are a senior in need of help.

According to an update provided by the City of Summerside, the priority is to get the streets powered up with the help of crew members from Saint John Energy who arrived Wednesday afternoon. It was estimated that 175 people were without power.

There is no estimated time for repairs on primary, secondary services and streets.

To aid in the process, Summerside Electric customers without power are asked to inspect the mast on their homes. This mast is the pole on a house which the power line from the street connects.

If the mast is damaged, customers are asked to contact a private electrical contractor to make the repairs.

The city utility crews cannot reconnect services to a damaged mast.

Once the mast has been repaired, or if it is not damaged, contact Summerside Electric at 902-432-1268 to be put on the list of those with an intact mast still without power.
