A’s, Bombers strike first

Game 2 of KCBL semifinals go Sunday

The Alley Stratford Athletics and Peakes Bombers won the opening games of the Kings County Baseball League semifinals Thursday.

Here is a recap of Game 1 in each of the best-of-five semifinal.

BOMBERS 6, CHEVIES 5

The Bombers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Morell Chevies 6-5.

The Chevies got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the third, capped off by a basesloaded single by Darcy Affleck that cleared the bases.

Peakes chipped away, scoring one run in the fourth as Jake MacLaren singled to score Sean Corcoran. In the fifth, Colin Myers reached on an error and swiped home on a wild pitch to make the score 4-2.

In the sixth, Tyson McInnis got things started for the Bombers with a double, Josh Coffin walked, before Myers drove a 3-2 pitched into left field for a double to tie the game.

The Chevies capitalized on a couple of Bombers’ errors in the bottom half of the sixth as Desi Doyle scored on a close play at the plate to take the lead.

In the top half of the seventh, Mitch Power reached on an error and stole second base before Connor Myers hit the game-tying double. McInnis and MacLaren followed with backto-back singles to score the goahead run.

Jarrod Laybolt led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the third-base line, but the Chevies were unable to cash him.

Scott Harper and Doyle each had two hits to lead the Chevies, while McInnis and MacLaren each had two hits for the Bombers

Rob Phelan was the winning pitcher, outduelling Troy Coffin in a well-pitched game. Both pitchers went the distance.

Game 2 is set for 4 p.m. Sunday in Peakes.

ATHLETICS 5, BREWERS 1

Brady Arsenault tossed a fourhitter to lead The Athletics past the Northside Brewers 5-1.

The Summerside native struck out 11 in the complete-game victory. Isaac Compton went the distance for the Brewers in taking the loss.

The A’s, who finished atop the standings in the regular season with a 17-7 mark, scored all five of their runs in a fourth-inning rally keyed by a two-run double by Jonathan Arsenault. Jason Maclean had the RBI hit for the Brewers in the top of the first.

Game 2 will be played Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in Morell.
