Phase II and Friends will feature the music of “Are You Lonesome Tonight – The Music of Elvis Presley” in Mount Stewart on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The performance will take place at Saint John’s United Church.

The show will feature more than 20 of the King’s hit songs. Presley was not only known for his rock n’ roll hits, he sang country, blues, folk and rockabilly as well. His greatest strength was likely in the area of gospel music.

“We wanted to do justice to the broad range of music covered by Mr. Presley and that’s no small task,’’ said Phase II spokesman Gerry Hickey. “People may be surprised by some of the songs he recorded. It was not all “Blue Suede Shoes’’ and “My Way’’.

“His repertoire even included a couple of songs written by the Island’s own Gene MacLellan.’’

Hickey said some of the songs they will feature at the show include “Are You Lonesome Tonight’’, “Hound Dog’’, “Love Me Teder’’, “Snowbird’’, “Blue Suede Shoes’’ and “My Way’’.

The band has performed Elvis songs for many years as a dance band but this is the first time they’ve tackled some of the more complicated concert pieces.

“Our musicians really put a lot of work into this show,’’ Hickey said.

Phase II and Friends consists of musicians Blaine Murphy, lead guitar; John McGarry, bass; Pat King, keys and sax; and Ed Young, drums. Vocals are supplied by Keila Glydon, Jeanie Campbell and Hickey.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Admission is at the door.
