Focus on climate change
Clayton Thomas-Müller to speak tonight at the Farm Centre
Clayton Thomas-Müller will be the guest speaker at a public event today at 7 p.m. at the P.E.I. Farm Centre.
Thomas-Müller is a campaigner for Indigenous rights and environmental and economic justice. Based in Winnipeg, he is a member of the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation, also known as Pukatawagan, in northern Manitoba. He is also a senior campaign specialist with 350.org, an international movement working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all.
The title of his presentation will be Climate Change, Indigenous Rights and Trade Justice.
“Clayton’s talk will undoubtedly be inspiring but also generate discussion and understanding of why we need a new model for trade which supports strong measures to combat climate change, reduces inequality and respects Indigenous and human rights,” said Rosalind Waters of Trade Justice P.E.I.
The Building a Just and Sustainable Future event series was organized by Trade Justice P.E.I., a coalition of 20 groups and individuals concerned about Canada’s current international trade agenda.
Its members also believe it’s time for trade that is more democratic and environmentally sustainable, more supportive of a transition to a carbon neutral economy in which workers receive their fair share of the benefits and is more respectful of the rights of Indigenous people.
“We’re hoping to demystify some of the complicated lingo that makes it hard for us to engage with issues around trade,” said organizer Gabrielle Ayles.
Organizers wanted to plan events to promote discussion and help people to find ways to act together.
“People are becoming increasingly aware of the many ways in which the rules of free trade are inconsistent with policy initiatives urgently needed to reduce C02 emissions,” said Waters.
