Lucas Kenneth Campbell sentenced to 4.5-month conditional sentence

A P.E.I. man who used a stolen debit card, took a TV from a Superstore and stole rum was recently given more than four months of house arrest.

Lucas Kenneth Campbell, 24, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to two counts of using a stolen debit card, three counts of breaching his probation and two counts of theft.

Reading an agreed statement of facts, Crown attorney Chad McQuaid told the court Campbell bought items from a Sobeys Express store multiple times using a stolen debit card.

Those purchased items were valued at a total of more than $120 and included cigarettes, rolling papers and a bottle of Mountain Dew.

Campbell also went to a Superstore in Charlottetown where he and a co-accused stole a 65-inch TV valued at $999.

In a separate incident, Campbell took two bottles of rum worth a total of $123.98 from a liquor store.

Before hearing his sentence, Campbell addressed the court and said he knew jail time was inevitable, but he asked to serve it on weekends because he had a job to go to and a place to live.

Campbell said that if Douglas followed precedent he would be released from jail in the winter with no money or a place to live.

“I’m just going to break the law again. I just want to succeed in life,” Campbell said.

With the conditional sentence, Campbell must remain in his home unless he is working or has permission from his supervisor and he will be subject to electronic monitoring as directed.

Campbell will be on probation for one year after his release.
