N.S. school wins first-ever title in 43-year history of M.E. Callaghan Girls Classic

Queen Charlotte, Birchwood take home medals

PROFIT’S CORNER – The Bible Hill Huskies from Truro, N.S., captured their first-ever M.E. Callaghan Girls Volleyball Classic tournament championsh­ip recently.

The Huskies swept the Queen Charlotte Coyotes from Charlottet­own 2-0 (25-9, 25-21) in the gold-medal match of the 43rd edition of the longestrun­ning junior high volleyball tournament in Canada.

The exciting final started with Queen Charlotte holding a slim 5-4 lead. However, a sixpoint rotation by tournament most valuable player Danielle Krzywonos, and a seven-point rotation by Maureen O’Connor, gave the Huskies a 17-6 lead and they would not look back.

Queen Charlotte led the second set 11-9, but Bible Hill took an 18-11 lead, thanks to a nine-point rotation by Olivia Robar. The Coyotes battled back to within 19-18 after Victoria Zakham registered seven points to make it a one-point match. But the Huskies would not be denied as Fayth Payson delivered the gold-medal-winning serve.

In the bronze-medal match, the Birchwood Cobras came back from losing the first set to edge the East Wiltshire Warriors 2-1 (10-25, 25-18, 15-11).

SEMIFINALS

In the semifinals, Bible Hill downed East Wiltshire 2-0 (254, 25-4) while Queen Charlotte defeated Birchwood 2-0 (25-20, 25-10).

In quarter-final action, East Wiltshire swept Kensington 2-0 (26-24, 25-23) and Birchwood edged four-time defendingc­hampion Stonepark A 2-1 (1225, 25-15, 15-10).

Kensington and Stonepark A finished tied for fifth in the 10team event.
