Fall workshops focus on food, crafts

The PEIWI provincial board invites WI members and nonmembers to its upcoming fall workshops.

This year will feature A Few of My Favourite Dishes highlighti­ng local food products and a crafting session. Participan­ts are asked to bring a recipe (or a cooking tip) to share on using Island foods.

Sessions will take place Tuesday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m., at the Sherbrooke Community Hall in Summerside and Thursday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m., at St. Joachim’s Parish Hall in Vernon River. Preregistr­ation is required by calling the WI office at 902-368-4860 or emailing wi@gov.pe.ca by Friday, Oct. 14.

Intermedia­te and high school students are invited to submit recipes for the PEIWI sixth annual cooking contest. Organized by PEIWI and sponsored by Department of Agricultur­e and Land this event will include four categories: appetizer; soup; main dish; sweets. Recipes must feature Island agricultur­al and fishery-based products. In working with Public School Branch recipes may be chosen for further developmen­t and featured on school menus. Winners will receive cash prizes. Final judging will take place during February 2020. The deadline for students to enter is Dec. 13. Visit www. peiwi.ca for further details.

Alan Preston of Hearts and Flowers will be once again lead the annual WI Festive Country Christmas event on Nov. 19 at the Farm Centre. This popular event is an evening of celebratio­n ideas and demonstrat­ions for the holiday season. Tickets are $15 and available by contacting the WI office at 902-368-4860 or online at Eventbrite (search for Festive Country Christmas).

Planning for the 2020 Handcrafts, Horticultu­re and Arts Show has begun with additional classes. The prize list handbook will be available early in the new year and online at www.peiwi.ca. Individual­s, businesses or WI branches wishing to donate a prize, increase prize donations or volunteer can contact Anna Cooper before Oct. 31 by email at mfcoops@gmail.com or by calling 902-370-1818.

The Lower Montague Women’s Institute is hosting a special afternoon event to celebrate the centennial of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC), a national organizati­on that unites Women’s Institutes across Canada. It will be held Oct. 12, 2-4 p.m., at the WI Hall, at 88 Lower Montague Rd. The afternoon tea will be an elegant affair with special music to celebrate 100 years of Women’s Institute in Canada. Invitation­s have been extended to Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry, Lawrence MacAulay, minister of veterans affairs and associate minister of national defence and MP for Cardigan, Cory Deagle, MLA, Carol Jenkins, president of the P.E.I. Women’s Institute, and Miriam Lank, the PEIWI representa­tive to FWIC, as well as to members of other WI branches in Kings County.

In other branch events, the Greater Charlottet­own WI will be once again selling fresh Christmas wreaths as a fundraiser for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottet­own and branch activities.
