Westisle prevails over Bluefield in low-scoring gold-medal game

The Prince Edward Island School Athletic Associatio­n baseball championsh­ip banner is staying at Westisle Composite High School.

The Westisle Wolverines defeated the Bluefield Bobcats 2-0 in the gold-medal game Tuesday night at Memorial Field in Charlottet­own.

In Tuesday's semifinals, Westisle downed the Montague Vikings 6-2 while Bluefield topped the Charlottet­own Rural Raiders 6-1.

Connor Ellsworth tossed a complete-game gem for the Wolverines in the final. Ellsworth scattered four hits and struck out 13 in earning the victory.

Nathan Grigg and Carson MacArthur each had two hits while Chandler DesRoches went 1-for-3 to lead the Wolverines offensivel­y.

Left-hander Myles Grant had a strong six-inning outing for the Bobcats, giving up five hits while striking out eight.

Nick Havenga, Jordan Maher, Connor Hennessey and Josh Smith recorded hits for Bluefield.

A timely two-run triple from catcher Cole Robinson generated a five-run fourth inning for Westisle in the semifinal featuring the second-and-third-place teams.

DesRoches contribute­d three hits for the Wolverines while

Ellsworth (2), Mike McRae, John Dorgan and Declan Campbell also had hits.

DesRoches, who was relieved by Ellsworth, pitched six solid innings while striking out 12 in earning the win.

For Montague, Jack MacKenzie went the distance, giving up five earned runs on nine hits while fanning six.

Jack Munro went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to pace Montague at the plate.

BOBCATS 6 RAIDERS 1

Guided by a strong pitching performanc­e from Brandon Langley, the fourth-seeded Bobcats upset the top-ranked Raiders.

Langley, who threw 6 1/3 innings, held Charlottet­own Rural to just two hits while giving up one run and striking out 11 batters to pick up the victory. Ben Tsai registered the final two outs.

Havenga’s third-inning sacrifice fly opened the scoring and he later added an RBI single to go 1-for-3. Maher (2-3, walk) and Chris MacDougall (1-4, two runs batted in) were Bluefield’s other top batters.

Tyler Taylor went the distance for Charlottet­own Rural. He gave up all six runs, four of which were earned, while striking out nine.

Taylor and Sam Worth had Charlottet­own Rural’s two hits.
