More weather-inspired art

- Cindy Day is Salt Wire Network’s Chief Meteorologist.

This spring Cindy Day reached out and asked you to submit your “grown-up” art.

Since we asked, our loyal Weather by Day followers have delivered. We’ve published dozens of paintings, photographs and doodles from artists of all ages who have picked up crayons, pencils, markers or even paint brushes to find their focus.

If you’ve recently discovered your artistic talent, we’d like to feature your weather-inspired artwork at Weather By Day in both print and online.

You can send a photo of a recent work of art along with a line or two about your inspiration or your reason for picking up the crayons after so many years, to weathermail@weatherbyday.ca

Today’s featured artists are Susan Paterson and Catherine Sorrey, who nominated her sister.

Here’s what Susan had to say: Hi Cindy, I am aware that you are only looking for art from amateur artists for your column but I thought you might be interested in seeing this anyway. For the last year I have been looking out my third floor studio window on Hawthorne Street and painting sunsets. I had thought painting sunsets from life would be impossible but over the year I learned a lot about what is similar and what is different in each evening sky, and learned to take a mental snapshot of a special moment from that particular evening. There is nothing like staring intently at something and quickly trying to paint it to get you to really see what is there. I noticed how the sunset moved over the months and then moved back, how the sky looked when a snowstorm was coming, how the sky is still quite light after the sun sets and how quickly everything changes! The board is 18” x 24”, divided into 16 rectangles. It was a lot of fun and I think I may do another one. Hope you enjoy it! All the best,

Susan Shape

And Catherine: As this is named for me I wanted to share proudly my artistic sister’s “New Beginnings” art. When gazing upon the picture one can almost feel yourself walking up the path while the leaves are surely falling away, the artistry of these will not. Catherine Sorrey
