Kobayashi, Veitch selected Hurricanes’ athletes of week

Women’s basketball player Aki Kobayashi and men’s volleyball player Gordon Veitch have been named the Holland Hurricanes’ athletes of the week for the week ending Nov. 17.

Kobayashi, a first-year guard from Hyogo, Japan, led the ‘Canes to a 75-54 victory on Saturday in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) regular-season action versus the Mount Allison University Mounties in Sackville, N.B. She would contribute 18 points, six rebounds, seven assists, one steal and one block. With the win, the Hurricanes improved to 2-1. The Hurricanes’ next game is Saturday versus the St. Thomas University Tommies. Tip-off at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottet­own is scheduled for 1 p.m. The first-place Tommies enter the matchup at 4-0.

Kobayashi is currently enrolled in the English for Academic Purposes program. Veitch, a fourth-year left side from Cymbria, P.E.I., had a strong weekend for the Hurricanes, who dropped both road matches versus the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves. Saturday, Veitch recorded nine kills, three assists, 12 digs and 9.5 points, before adding eight points on Sunday, plus five digs and 11 points. The Hurricanes dropped to 1-4 as they prepare for a big home game versus St. Thomas (2-1) at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement on Saturday, at 8 p.m.

Veitch is currently enrolled in the Environmen­tal Applied Sciences Technology program.
