PEISO concert Nov. 24
Program includes ‘The Planets’ and ‘The Hockey Sweater’
The P.E.I. Symphony’s 52nd season continues Sunday, Nov. 24, 2:30 p.m., with “Space & The Rocket” at the Homburg Theatre of Confederation Centre of the Arts.
The second concert of the season features Gustav Holst’s massive “The Planets”. Because the music is so recognizable, “The Planets” has become an alltime classical favourite.
Also, on the program is Abigail Richardson-Schulte’s lively “The Hockey Sweater”. Based on the famous Roch Carrier short story it will be narrated by P.E.I.’s own Patrick Ledwell. His quick-witted comedy has brought him national recognition with multiple appearances on CBC Radio’s “The Debaters”.
A Canadian best-selling author, Ledwell is a popular host and comedian at events across Canada, from the Royal Visit to Charlottetown to a recent performance in Inuvik, above the Arctic Circle.
The combination of these works makes this concert an ideal concert for the entire family.
The symphony season continues March 1 with “True North” featuring gifted up-andcoming conductor Mélanie Léonard. She will present an afternoon of all Canadian masterpieces. Léonard has selected to perform works by composers Peter Charles Allen, Sid Robinovitch, Jocelyn Morlock and Alice Ping Yee Ho. A performance by horn player Justin Amador, the PEISO’s young artist Suzanne Brenton Award winner, rounds out the afternoon’s delights.
The final concert of the season, “Copland and Rachmaninoff” takes place April 19 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Two masterworks conclude the season: Aaron Copland’s popular “Symphony No. 3”, which features the familiar theme from his “Fanfare for the Common Man” and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 3”, which will be passionately and imaginatively performed by the Island’s Sarah Hagen.
