Theatre performance students prepare for cabaret

-

Second-year students in the School of Performing Arts theatre performance program are preparing for a special evening cabaret taking place at Baba’s Lounge on Friday, 7-8 p.m.

There is no admission charge for the cabaret, and all ages are welcome to attend.

The students came up with the idea of putting together a cabaret while they were preparing songs for their voice ensemble course, said Adan Bram, the student responsible for organizing the event.

“The project started two months ago when we were picking songs for the end of semester,” the native of Mexico City said. “We have solo pieces, duets, trios, quartets, and all the students will be on stage for the grand finale. We have rehearsals every day, and everyone has been working really hard to prepare.”

Each of the 10 students in the second year of the theatre performance program directed one of the pieces, which include selections from “Grease”, “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Chicago”, along with classic jazz; and they have also been responsible for promoting the show. They will be accompanied on the keyboard by their instructor, Jenn Cullen.

The School of Performing Arts is a partnership between Holland College and Confederation Centre of the Arts. Peggy Reddin, the manager of SoPA programs at Confederation

Centre of the Arts, said planning the cabaret has been an invaluable experience for the students.

“They have been able to apply many of the skills they have learned so far to pull this show together. We’re very proud of them, and I know that they are looking forward to performing in front of a live audience.”

The students will be busy as they near the end of this semester.

In addition to the cabaret they will tour Island schools early in December as part of their Theatre for Young Audiences course.
