Holland College teams close out 2019 Sunday

The Holland Hurricanes’ basketball teams will close out the 2019 portion of their Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) regular seasons this weekend.

The Hurricanes will visit the St. Thomas Tommies in Fredericto­n, N.B., on Sunday. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 4 p.m.

The Holland College women were 3-1 (won-lost) entering Friday’s scheduled road game against the Crandall Chargers and are coming off a 65-62 overtime win over the Tommies last Saturday in Charlottet­own. St. Thomas is 4-1.

Both teams were ranked nationally by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (CCAA) this week – the Hurricanes were No. 5 and the Tommies were at No. 10.

As a team, Holland College’s offence is second in the conference in points averaged per game at 77.8 while the Tommies are fifth at 66.8.

Defensivel­y, St. Thomas leads the conference, giving up an average of only 54 points per game while the ‘Canes are fifth at 68.8.

The ‘Canes lead the conference in field-goal shooting (44.1

per cent), three-point shooting (38.1 per cent, rebounds per game (47.3), and assists per game (19.5).

Individual­ly, Ashley Plaggenhoe­f went into weekend action second in the conference in scoring with 16.5 points per game while Kassandra Little and Sophie Atkinson sit one-two in rebounds per game with 12.8 and 10.8 respective­ly.

MEN

The Holland College men entered weekend play 3-1 while the Tommies are 3-2.

In the first meeting between the two teams in Charlottet­own a week ago, the Hurricanes picked up a 97-69 win.

The Hurricanes enter this weekend ranked No. 8 in the CCAA rankings.

The Hurricanes are the top offensive team in the ACAA, averaging 88 points per game while also leading the way in rebounds per game at 45. Holland College sits second in assists per game at 17.8 and the Tommies are fourth at 76.6.

Defensivel­y, the Hurricanes are fourth by allowing 73 points per game while the Tommies are fifth at 75.8.

Individual­ly, the Hurricanes’ Jordan Holness leads the conference in scoring, averaging 25.3 points per game, and assists per game with 6.0. Nathan Anderson is second in the conference in rebounding at 9.8 per game. Holness close behind in fourth with 8.8.
