KENSINGTON – Landon Clow made sure the game-winning goal counted the second time.

The third-year forward scored with 1:23 left in a five-minute overtime period, featuring 3-on-3 play, to give the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild a 4-3 win over the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Knights on Thursday night. The annual Boxing Day game between the two Island entries in the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League was played at Credit Union Centre in Kensington before a standing-room-only crowd estimated at 650 fans.

Clow, who was set up by

Austin Arsenault, got in behind a Charlottetown defender at the Knights’ blue-line, then used his speed to break to the goal off the

right-wing and fired the puck into the net off the post.

It appeared Clow had given the Wild a 4-3 lead with 1:13 remaining in regulation time as his shot was originally ruled a goal. The Knights questioned the call and after the officials met at centre ice the goal was called back as they determined the puck did not cross the goal-line.

Kensington, which improved to 13-6-2, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on two goals by Reid Peardon.

Will Smith got the Knights on the board just past the fiveminute mark of the second period, but Arsenault restored the Wild’s two-goal lead at 10:52.

The Wild ran into penalty problems late in the second period and the Knights struck for a pair of 5-on-3 power-play goals 18 seconds apart from captain Max Chisholm (19:20) and Cameron

MacLean (19:38) to send the teams into the second intermission tied 3-3.

Kensington successfully killed off an extended 5-on-3 Charlottetown power play to start the third period, which was cut short when the Knights were whistled for a goalie interference minor at 1:10.

Dixon MacLeod (2), Crosby Andrews, Duncan Picketts, Sam MacNeill and Donovan Arsenault also assisted for the Wild. Simon Hughes (2), Colby Huggan (2), Chisholm and MacLean collected helpers for the Knights (5-14-3).

The Wild’s Jonah Arbing had 28 saves while the Knights’ Aiden Williams stopped 41 shots.
