String of thefts leads to jail

- RYAN ROSS

A P.E.I. man who stole more than $4,000 worth of items during a spree that spanned several months was sentenced recently to 14 months in jail.

Lucas Kenneth Campbell, 24, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he was sentenced on 14 charges that included thefts, breaching his probation and failing to attend court.

During an appearance in February, Crown attorney Nathan Beck detailed a string of thefts that Campbell committed started in July 2019 when he stole a flat screen TV worth $999 from a Superstore.

During several days in

October, Campbell stole a quart of Captain Morgan rum, Beats headphones worth $580, a cart full of tools valued at $427.95 from Canadian Tire and $874 worth of items from Sport Chek.

In November, Campbell stole from a Needs Convenience store, Mark’s Work Wearhouse twice taking a total of $628.98 in items and a further $315.94 in goods from

Sport Chek.

Campbell was supposed to be serving four months of house arrest at the time, but he cut off an electronic monitoring bracelet in October before committing most of the latest offences.

Beck told the court Campbell had an extensive prior record that included 16 thefts and 18 breaches of court orders.

During Campbell’s most recent court appearance, Orr said the most aggravating factors were that Campbell was on probation at the time and was on a conditional sentence order when he committed most of the offences.

Campbell will be on probation for 18 months after his release and must write apology letters to the managers of each business.
