Ben MacDougall repeats as male athlete of the year

-

SUMMERSIDE – Two first cousins from Summerside recently completed their high school athletic careers in style.

Lauren Lilly became the first student in Three Oaks Senior High School’s (TOSH) 44-year history to be named senior female athlete of the year three years in a row. Ben MacDougall capped an impressive resumé with backto-back male athlete of the year awards.

Lauren is the daughter of Ian and Carol (MacDougall) Lilly while Ben is the son of Dale and Krista MacDougall.

The awards were announced through social media due to the coronavirus (COVID-19 strain).

FEMALE ATHLETE

“Lauren is, without question, one of the best athletes, male or female, in our community,” said TOSH acting athletic director Ashley Praught. “She works hard to improve her game and her work ethic enables her to be one of the best players in any league she enters.”

Lilly was an integral member of the Axewomen’s senior AAA volleyball, senior AAA basketball, badminton, softball and track and field teams during her three years at TOSH.

In the 2019-20 season, Lilly was selected as a provincial championship tournament all-star for both volleyball and basketball.

“Her coaches have pointed out that Lauren has a competitive mindset that pushes her to want to always be doing her best,” said Praught. “She is willing to have those tough conversations with her coaches that many are afraid to have, about what she can do to be even better.”

MALE ATHLETE

Praught said MacDougall had one of the most successful athletic careers of any TOSH athlete.

He played a major part in his teams winning eight provincial titles in his three years in high school and has been an all-star or most valuable player of these leagues multiple times.

He has represented TOSH in volleyball, baseball, basketball and badminton.

“From the moment he walked through the doors of Three Oaks, he was one of, if not the best player, on every court he stepped foot on,” said Praught.

“This is a result of his work ethic, which is second to none.

“He also cares about being the best day in and day out, so as a coach and teammate you never get cheated in effort or want.”

MacDougall was a provincial championship tournament all-star in volleyball and provincial championship tournament most valuable player in basketball.
