$1.1-MILLION DONATION TO P.E.I. HUMANE SOCIETY
Expanding our Paw Print to support a major renovation
Jennifer Harkness, development and communications manager with the P.E.I. Humane Society, is thrilled with a recent $1.1-million anonymous donation to the society. The donation will allow the society to move ahead with expansion plans, creating more space for animals like Quincy, a 110-pound, seven-year-old king German shepherd, that is up for adoption. The P.E.I. Humane Society (PEIHS) has received an anonymous gift of $1.1 million.
The money means that the society is able to announce the completion of the Expanding our Paw Print capital campaign. It brings the total capital funds raised to $3,132,109.
The campaign was launched in 2018 to support a major renovation at the shelter located at 309 Sherwood Rd., Charlottetown. The project is due to be completed in early 2022 and includes new sick bays, dog kennels, recovery rooms and treatment facilities for sick and injured animals.
The PEIHS envisions a standard of excellence in all aspects of animal welfare and shelter care. These future changes will protect staff and other healthy animals at the shelter.
"With all my heart, I would like to immensely thank the anonymous donor and their family for this incredible gift to care for our Island animals,” says Jennifer Harkness, development and communications manager.
“We are grateful to the steering committee, staff, volunteers and donors who helped make the dream of a new building a reality. Words are not enough to express our organization's gratitude for the kindness we have seen from our community. This renovation will help thousands of homeless animals a year get the best care they can, at a progressive shelter, right here on
P.E.I."
Working with Sable Arc Architects and Orange Door Engineering, the PEIHS is now taking steps to start Phase II, the animal care space construction, in 2021.
During the build, shelter operations will relocate for one year, and the PEIHS will be seeking a temporary location. The PEIHS may conduct future fundraising for animal care and building equipment, if needed.
The Expanding Our Paw Print capital campaign will help the PEIHS create a safe and welcoming facility that promotes companion animal health in its care and across the province.
