Helping those in Kenya

50-50 draw set up by Mikinduri Children of Hope

-

Mikinduri Children of Hope (MCOH) is holding a weekly 50-50 draw to help raise funds for much-needed handwashing stations in Kenya.

Because of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the charitable organization has had to rethink how best to assist its friends in Mikinduri, Kenya. The registered charity, established on the Island in 2003 by Ted and Rita Grant and Makenna Ambassa to help relieve poverty and sickness, had to cancel the support team’s trip there in June. As well, some of the groups’ major fundraisers, like the annual mammoth yard sale in May and the Royal Canadian Air Force 201 Wing lottery, had to be put on hold to 2021.

The needs, however, continue and are intensified by the presence of the virus, a locust infestation and the closing of schools.

“COVID-19 has changed the ways that we traditionally assist, for sure,” says Elaine Black, MCOH fundraising liaison chairwoman.

“We knew the need was great at home, so we were cautious about pressuring locally for donations. Our feet on the ground in Mikinduri and area tell us that handwashing stations are incredibly important as access to clean water and soap is limited. We believe we can provide the stations for about $50 each. So, we are reaching out to individuals or groups to provide a station to give them the ability to keep their hands clean, which is so much more pertinent now because the presence of the coronavirus. Even a small contribution can make a big difference.”

For $2, supporters can purchase a weekly 50-50 ticket drawn each Friday at winwin. mikinduri.com. Many people purchase their weekly ticket for multiple weeks at a time to save going online each week.

Water station supporters can also send their contribution to Mikinduri Children of Hope, 2 Waterview Dr., Cornwall, P.E.I. C0A 1H4. E-transfers can be sent to donate@mikinduri.com. A tax receipt will be issued if an address is provided.

Black says donation go a long way in Kenya, and there is such a great need for so many families.
