OPPOSED TO WINDMILLS

-

P.E.I. Energy has plans to build seven windmills that are 60 stories high (175 metres) on land that not only inhabits wildlife but also many residents at the eastern tip of Prince Edward Island, East Point.

Over 100 residents were against the proposal and have voiced their concerns to the East Point council, Council for the Rural Municipality of Eastern Kings.

The council has voted no, on several occasions, for the windmills. This is not only because of their residents' opposition but there are also environmental concerns. The windmills will affect the migratory bird paths. Birds fly low during storm fronts and in heavy fog which will cause them to be in direct contact with the large span of the windmills, which in turn will cause deaths.

The windmills will also impact parts of the forest and marshlands which many wildlife inhabit.

The windmills will be built directly in the middle of many species' natural habitats.

Not only will it also affect the environment negatively, but also affect tourism rates on P.E.I. East Point is a well-loved tourist destination, along with the lighthouse it is recognized for its natural beauty and breath-taking views. Although, if the 60-storey windmills are placed here it will take away from the natural beauty that attracts tourists. What would happen if we did not have the tourists to support our economy?

Against the will of the people, the windmills are still in motion to be built; regardless of the migratory bird path, destruction of natural habitats, and loss of tourism. I disagree with this decision and feel it is wrong for these to be built.
