Man who smashed car with truck jailed 40 days
Matthew Charles Fall reported himself to police after incident
A P.E.I. man who smashed a car by ramming it with a truck was recently sentenced to 40 days in jail and told he needs to get his anger issues under control.
Matthew Charles Fall, 29, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown by video from jail where he has been in custody since his arrest.
Fall previously pleaded guilty to one count of damaging property.
During that previous appearance, the court heard Kings District RCMP responded on Sept. 19 at around 4 a.m. after Fall called to report he smashed a car with a truck.
The court heard the victim reported Fall punched out the windows in the truck’s cap then rammed the other vehicle twice.
During the recent appearance, Crown attorney Chad McQuaid said Fall has been given numerous opportunities to deal with his anger, but he continues to engage in criminal activity.
Fall has a prior criminal record that includes convictions for damaging property, unlawful entry, break and enter, and multiple breaches of court orders.
McQuaid said jail time is warranted and the court should focus more on denunciation and deterrence.
Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Fall takes full responsibility, saying his client was the one who called the police to report his behaviour.
Fall also addressed the court, saying he still wants to do counselling and anger management.
Before sentencing Fall, Orr said it was concerning that he was sober when he damaged the vehicles, adding that he was unable to control himself.
Fall needs to get his anger under control, Orr said.
“Obviously there’s a great deal of work that needs to be done.”
Along with the jail time, Fall will be on probation for 18 months after his release.
