Caps split games in Nova Scotia

MacNeill scores for Bridgewate­r, Caseley records shutout as Amherst blanks Pictou County

YARMOUTH, N.S. – The Yarmouth Mariners handed the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals their first loss of the young Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) regular season on Saturday night.

The host Mariners scored goals in each period in a 3-0 home-ice win over the Caps. The result gave the Caps a split of back-to-back road games following a 4-2 win over the South Shore Lumberjack­s on Friday night.

The Caps, who are 2-1-0, travel to Berwick, N.S., to take on the Valley Wildcats (3-2-1) on Friday night before returning to Eastlink Arena to host the Lumberjack­s (0-60) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Before 456 fans at the Mariner Centre, Justin Sumarah registered a 26-save shutout while Carson Lanceleve (1-1), Hunter Livingston and Sam Gillis scored for Yarmouth.

Stephen Giansante stopped 30 of 33 shots in his regularsea­son debut between the pipes for the Capitals.

The Mariners were 1-for-6 on the power play and the Caps went 0-for-6.

CAPS 4 LUMBERJACK­S 2

Before 264 fans at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre, Owen Gilhula recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Capitals.

Cole Edwards and Riley MacDougall also scored for the Capitals. Cam Roberts added an assist.

Stratford native Sam MacNeill, who played with the Kensington Wild major under-18 team last year, and Will Chisholm countered for the Lumberjack­s.

The Caps held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1.

Winning goaltender Mavrick Goyer turned aside 28 shots. Robert Forbes allowed three goals on 38 shots between the pipes for the Lumberjack­s. The Caps’ fourth goal was scored into an empty net with five seconds remaining.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Kensington native Tyler Caseley earned a 28-save shutout for the Amherst Ramblers on Saturday night. Caseley was named the second star in the Ramblers’ 4-0 win over the visiting Pictou County Crushers.

Ethan Landry, who has family connection­s to P.E.I., scored his second goal of the season for the Valley Wildcats on Friday night. Landry’s goal at 13:58 of the third period gave Valley a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-0 victory over the

Yarmouth Mariners.

Montague native and defenceman Zac Arsenault earned an assist in helping the Grand Falls Rapids to a 6-2 road win over the Campbellto­n Tigers on Friday night. It was Campbellto­n’s first regular-season game due to the recent outbreak of the coronaviru­s (COVID-19) in the Campbellto­n area. Arsenault is an assistant captain with the Rapids.

North Bedeque native Coleton Perry picked up an assist for the Tigers against the Rapids. Perry is the Tigers’ team captain.

Evan Gallant of AbramVilla­ge scored his first goal of the season to help Pictou County to a 4-2 home-ice victory over the Truro Bearcats on Thursday night. Gallant scored into an empty net at 18:46 of the third period to give the Crushers a 4-1 lead.
