Samantha Elizabeth Cheverie ignored no-contact conditions multiple times

A P.E.I. woman who was caught twice in one week with someone she wasn’t supposed to have contact with was sentenced recently to more than three months in jail on five charges.

Samantha Elizabeth Cheverie, 26, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown by video from jail where she has been in custody since her arrest.

Cheverie was sentenced to 3.5 months in jail after pleading guilty to obstructing police, two counts of breaching her probation and two counts of breaching an undertaking.

Crown attorney Lisa Goulden told the court that on Aug. 13, the police responded to an accident on the Blue Shank Road where they found Cheverie was the driver and was with a man she wasn’t supposed to have contact with. Cheverie’s licence was suspended at the time, and the vehicle she was driving wasn’t registered or insured.

Goulden said the police were dispatched a week later to a single-vehicle accident in Springvale where Cheverie was a passenger in a vehicle with the same man who was the subject of the no-contact order.

The court heard Cheverie gave the police a false name, but another officer later realized who she really was.

Goulden said Cheverie tried to contact the man while she was in jail by giving a false name for him to be added to her phone list of people she is allowed to call.

Before sentencing Cheverie, Orr wondered at what point she will start complying with court orders.

Along with the jail time, Orr gave Cheverie a further one year of probation.
