Community

The Town of Georgetown kicks off the Christmas season with the annual tree-lighting ceremony on Nov. 29. The Kings Playhouse will be fully decorated, and a special gentleman in a red suit might be dropping by for photos with the kids (safely distanced). Hot chocolate will be served. The Town of Kensington's annual Christmas parade is Dec. 6, 5 p.m., with parade entries assigned parking spots on Gerald McCarville Drive and Park Road in the town's industrial park. The public will be able to view the floats and displays by turning onto Gerald McCarville Drive and progressin­g through Park Road. Town councillor­s will accept food donations in support of the Kensington Lions Club Food Drive. The Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is at the gazebo by the old Kensington train station following the parade. With limited attendance due to COVID-19, the ceremony will be available on Facebook Live for the public.

Wintertide Holiday Home Decorating Contest is open for all Charlottet­own residents. Participan­ts must register by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 7. Judging is the week of Dec. 14. Entries are being judged on use of natural materials, use of lighting, creativity with materials and overall design. All entries will be judged in the best overall category with the option to be entered into a new category this year: kids’ choice. Classes/workshops/ lessons

Winter Magic Art Workshops are at the Kings Playhouse, Georgetown, with special holiday-themed art. All materials are provided. Fa-la-la-la Felting is the theme for the art class on Nov. 26, led by Jamie Rice with lessons on creating beautiful felting designs. Painting With Amy will feature a holidaythe­med paint night on Dec. 3. All ages are welcome. Admission is charged.

After school art workshops for kids began Nov. 24, 3:30 p.m., at the Kings Playhouse in Georgetown and will continue Tuesdays until Dec. 15. Amy MacConnell will lead the class in creating ornaments and holiday crafts.

Free fiddle lessons are in Rollo Bay at Pavillon de l’est ecole la belle cloche every Monday. Beginners start at 6 p.m. sharp, intermedia­te students are at 6:30 p.m. and advanced students are 7-7:30 p.m. Classes are limited to 14 students plus teacher Kathryn dau Schmidt in the music room on the lower level. The kitchen group meets 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the stage on the lower level, limited to 15 members. Registrati­on is recommende­d in advance to ensure a seat. HA Club artistic director and improv teacher Laurie Murphy is offering drop-in improv classes and shows in November and December at The Haviland Club, 2 Haviland St., Charlottet­own. Festivals

The Charlottet­own Christmas Festival continues until Dec. 13. In addition to its signature event – the Victorian Christmas Market presented by Confederat­ion Court Mall, Nov. 27-29 – there will be festive programmin­g like wine tastings, retail trails, historic walking tours, carolers, cooking workshops, ice sculptures, Christmas movies, gingerbrea­d house-making competitio­ns, live music and children’s entertainm­ent.

Le Festival des Fêtes (The Holiday Festival) is back at the Village musical acadien in Abram-Village, Nov. 29 to Dec. 20. Live music

Rustico Bay Seniors bi-weekly ceilidh, hosted by Katlyn Gallant and Lori Dempster, will continue on Nov. 28, 8 p.m., at 2104 Church Rd., Rustico, with special guest Larry Campbell. Well-known for his appealing personalit­y and his rich, melodious voice, he plays all genres of music from classic country, blues and country rock. The 2020 Fall Lecture Series of the Benevolent Irish Society will host a public lecture by John Flood on Nov. 27, 7:30 p.m., called Celebratin­g Katherine Hughes: The Road to Recognitio­n. This talk will highlight some of her achievemen­ts and serve as the platform for unveiling plans by the BIS to honour her with a permanent commemorat­ion. The members of the Eptek Centre Book Club meet Dec. 3, 7 p.m., to discuss Where’d You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple. Stand-up comedy open mic with Sam MacDonald is Nov. 28, 8 p.m., at Baba’s Lounge in Charlottet­own.

ACT presents It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry, based on the classic movie written and directed by Frank Capra. Set on a 1940s radio stage, six actors will portray dozens of characters. Complete with Foley sound effects, they will bring the story to life in front of a live audience. Dinner theatre

Christmas Dinner Theatre – Le Prix de Noël (The Price of Christmas) – is being presented as part of Le Festival des Fêtes at the Village musical acadien. Written and directed by Eileen Pendergast, the story tells how Mr. Basil (Blair Arsenault) finds a convenient way to prepare for the holidays. This dinner theater will be presented Dec. 2, 3 and 5, 6:30 p.m. A delicious meal will first be served. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m.

Submission­s will be open until Nov. 27. Credit Union Music P.E.I. Week is currently set for March 3-7. Music P.E.I. is working on various options and contingenc­y plans but there will most definitely be a celebratio­n of the province’s incredible music industry. Through the Lens and Palette – Photograph­y and visual art by Ann Clow is the featured art exhibit for December at the Kings Playhouse in Georgetown.
