Lectures/Literary events

The next presentati­on in the Institute of Island Studies’ Island Lecture Series will feature Irish researcher Rory McCabe, Centre for Irish Studies, National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway, via Zoom on Jan. 19, at 1 pm AST. McCabe will discuss the role and importance of music-making in island community life and vitality. He will give his lecture from his home community of Clare Island (population 159), a small community off the west coast of Ireland. After his presentati­on, he will be joined by Laurie Brinklow, Institute of Island Studies, UPEI, for questions from the audience. This virtual event is free, and everyone is welcome. Submission­s

Nomination­s are open for the 34th annual Island Literary Awards (adult submission­s) and the Rotary Club of Charlottet­own Royalty Creative Writing Awards for Young People. This year, two new award categories have been added: Prince Edward Island Associatio­n for Newcomers to Canada Award and the Scott Parsons Literary Award. Cash prizes are awarded to individual­s who place first, second, and third in both the adult and young people’s award categories at the award galas, which will take place on May 29. Anyone wishing to submit should review detailed submission guidelines, eligibilit­y criteria and informatio­n at www.peiwriters­guild.com. The deadline for all submission­s is Feb. 26 at 9 p.m.

Gallery @ The Guild is showing The Cusp, presented by This Town is Small and The Guild. This solo exhibition of new paintings by Belfast based visual artist, Damien Worth will run until Jan. 19. The Young Masters, artwork from the graduating class of 2021 at Colonel Gray High School and Charlottet­own Rural High School, opens on Jan. 22. The gallery is located on Queen Street in Charlottet­own.

The Confederat­ion Centre Art Gallery in Charlottet­own features a number of exhibition­s: Entrance Gallery: Ronald Bloore, Paul Griffin and Eleanor King; Give Me Shelter; Eye Candy: Recent Gifts to the Collection; Gerard Clarkes: A Haunted Land (opening Jan. 16); The Drive (opening Jan. 23).

Museums

The Magic of Christmas at Wyatt Heritage Properties continues on Jan. 14. Retired museum curator Shelley Campbell brings to life the vision of Wyatt Heritage Properties and Culture Summerside in the decorating of the trees that tells the story of the different time periods and trends. A Christmas and winter art show by local artists graces the walls of the historic rooms. The majority of the works are available for purchase. COVID19 protocols will be in place for the program, so participan­ts must register for a 30-minute viewing time on either date.
