Explore Prince Edward Island fun and ‘get away’ right here at home

It only takes a little bit of fresh snow to feel like you’re in a winter wonderland on Prince Edward Island.

Its red cliffs and green fields may make many yearn for summer, but its snow-covered trees and historic buildings paint the perfect picture during the winter, too. It’s a place where indoor and outdoor activities can equally capture your heart.

For Isabel Delaney and her husband, Garth, winter adventures have taken them to Mill River Resort in Woodstock for a weekend getaway with friends earlier in January.

“There was fresh snow on the trees all the way along the lane to the resort — it was gorgeous,” Isabel says.

The Charlottetown couple met their friends at the resort and set out to try its golf simulator. She says the group was blown away by the stimulator’s accuracy and that the room’s comfy chairs, high-top tables and amazing service made it a next-level experience.

“It was just a lovely way to spend a few hours,” says Isabel, adding that her friends loved the resort’s spa and its many outdoors activities. She recommends that people come prepared with winter gear to take full advantage of this escape that’s close to home. “Mill River is a great place to go to feel like you’re getting a break from home for a bit.”

Winter fun is taking on a different form for Will Alexander, who bought himself a pair of skates this year for the first time in decades. He decided to take up the winter activity to get him outside this winter.

“It’s a perfect winter activity to stay active, so I got my skates and am waiting for the rinks to freeze,” he says.

Having grown up skating on backyard rinks, it’s a hobby Will is eager to take up once again alongside his wife, Breagh. Of the many outdoor rinks to choose from across Prince Edward Island, Will says they’ll try the Founders’ Hall rink first since it’s close to their downtown Charlottetown home.

Will says skating is something that other people, whether experienced skaters or taking up an old hobby like him, should do to get outside this winter.

“It’s been almost 20 years and my form is probably gone,” says Will. “It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a while.”
