MacPhee named P.E.I.’s technical director

Kris MacPhee is the new technical director for Hockey P.E.I.

The Clyde River native replaces Connor Cameron, who recently became the organizati­on’s executive director. MacPhee starts the new position on Monday.

“After a thorough search and interview process, it became clear that Kris’s background, experience and profession­alism would be the best fit for our organizati­on,” said Hockey P.E.I. president Mike Hammill. “We are extremely pleased to have him join our staff and look forward to putting his talents to work.”

MacPhee, 40, played his minor hockey with the North River Flames and continued through junior and the pro ranks.

MacPhee began his junior career by being named the Maritime Hockey League’s rookie of the year with the Summerside Western Capitals in 1997-98. He played in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborou­gh Petes and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Rimouski Oceanic before returning to the Caps. He led the Maritime junior A circuit in points with 107 and was named the MVP in 2000-01.

He was a UPEI Panther from 2001-05 before beginning his pro career in the ECHL with the Dayton Bombers and Charlotte Checkers from 2005-06. MacPhee finished his playing career in 2007 with the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League.

“Our team here at the Hockey P.E.I. branch office is excited to welcome Kris and look forward to having his leadership working on the technical forefronts of our operations, including our high-performanc­e program,” Cameron said.

MacPhee started Breakaway Hockey Conditioni­ng Inc. in 2004. As owner/ operator he trained players amongst the likes of NHLers Joel Ward and Mark Flood.

He was director of Andrews Sport Conditioni­ng from 2008 to 2014 before becoming the owner of Synergy Fitness and Nutrition. MacPhee is also a current sessional lecturer within the kinesiolog­y department at UPEI.

MacPhee has also been a head coach with the Cornwall Thunder major under18 team and an assistant with the Panthers. He also scouted for the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs.

MacPhee graduated from UPEI with a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in history, and also earned a masters in sports science majoring in coaching from the United States Sports Academy. He lives in Charlottet­own with his wife Anne Marie and their two daughters Lucy, 9, and Elena, 3.
