Winter Woodlot Tour Feb. 6 in Rustico

Watershed organizati­ons from Wheatley River, Hunter-Clyde, Central Queens and Trout River invite the public to attend the eighth annual Winter Woodlot Tour on Saturday, Feb. 6.

This annual event is intended to give everyone an opportunit­y to explore the diverse resources and benefits that public and private forests provide to our Island environmen­t. This year’s event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a private woodlot located at 215 Buffalo Rd., Rustico. The storm date is Feb. 20.

The woodlot on the Buffalo Road is located in the Wheatley River Watershed and provides a snapshot of the diversity of Island resources from farming to forestry and recreation­al activities. This area has a rich natural history encompassi­ng fields and forests, streams and rivers, diverse wildlife habitats and multi-use recreation­al trails.

Fun and family-friendly activities include snowshoein­g, obstacle course from Scouts Canada, falconry demonstrat­ions, making maple syrup, horse logging demonstrat­ions and more.

Informatio­n stations along the wooded trails will feature winter wildlife, plants and trees of the Acadian Forest, private woodlot management, chainsaw maintenanc­e, forest-based products and woodworkin­g

A heated tent will be provided with many exhibits and, as always, free hot cider.

There is no charge to attend; however donations will be accepted to help offset expenses and ensure this popular event will continue in the future.
