Laaouan, Kelly-Murphy earn team honours
A Charlottetown Islander and a resident of China Point, P.E.I., have been recognized for their work in the classroom.
Noah Laaouan, a 19-yearold defenceman with the Islanders, and Logan KellyMurphy, a blue-liner with the Cape Breton Eagles, are their respective teams’ Scholastic players of the month for January.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) recently announced the recipients for each team.
Both are business students with Laaouan, a Halifax native, studying at UPEI and
Kelly-Murphy, who turns 20 next week, attending Cape Breton University.
Two other players with Island connections were also recognized.
Carter Murchison, a 16-year-old forward, received the award for the RouynNoranda Huskies.
Murchison is the son of former Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capital Bruce Murchison, and his grandmother, Judy Murchison, is a former team president of the Caps.
The Capitals drafted him in the sixth round in 2020, but he made the Huskies out of camp after being a third-round pick in the QMJHL.
Murchison is a Grade 11 student at Charles P. Allen High School in Bedford, N.S., and is studying online.
Angus Booth, a 16-yearold defenceman, earned the honour for the Shawinigan Cataractes.
The Islanders drafted Booth in the fourth round of the 2020 drafted and traded him to Shawinigan for a second-round pick in 2022 in August.
Booth is in the secondary 5 program at Académie les Estacades.
