Hamilton police and the Ontario Fire Marshal are investigating a suspicious fire at an Ancaster home early Christmas morning.

Neighbour Ken Parker, the caretaker of the property, said one of the two tenants of the burned-out home and a guest, both men in their late 40s, were asleep when the fires were set.

“They couldn’t get out at first, so they were throwing water at one of the doors to get out,” Parker said. “It’s like whoever set the fire didn’t want them to get out.”

The owner of the house doesn’t live at the rental property, he said.

Staff Sgt. Jamie Moore said police were investigating the incident because they believe somebody set fires outside of the house.

Moore said police couldn’t share more details during the ongoing investigation.

With one of the men sleeping on a couch, whoever started the fires would have easily been able to see there was someone there, Parker said.

The fire wasn’t particularly big, he said, noting he woke up as the first emergency response vehicles arrived on scene.

Hamilton Fire spokesperson Claudio Mostacci said units were sent to the 489 Old Dundas Rd. home at about 4 a.m. When firefighters arrived, police were already on scene.

The blaze was quickly extinguished and caused about $10,000 in damage, Mostacci said. No one was injured.

At about 2 p.m. Friday, Parker said police were still protecting the scene, waiting for the fire marshal to arrive.
