What can be done to support our school community?

- VERSAILLA KAHNAMOUI, GRADE 7

Dear Teachers and Parents,

As grades 6 to 8 are gearing up for the high school years, where work is more demanding and a lot harder, students are realising that our school curriculum is too easy and needs to be improved if students want to improve. I propose the idea of having advanced classes to support students who want to excel in school and life. Math In my opinion our math class needs improvement. It has become too easy for some and about right for others. I know some math subjects are easier than others, like a patterning class, but teachers should put it out there for the kids who want to do extra and bonus work. In math this year our class has barely received any homework because everybody finishes in class. It’s so easy that everyone zooms through the work and gets it done. If we weren’t allowed to have all advanced classes this is one that I would recommend to have. French & Music Not that we should have advanced classes in French and music, we just need these classes to be more useful. In French I believe we should be learning the things that would be useful if we were to go to Paris. For example, we should learn how to book a plane flight or a trip in French. We should be learning how to communicate with people if we were to get lost. We need French subjects that would benefit us, not learning about pizza.

Music. Music is hard to explain to you especially if you are not in the class yourself. We have some very talented musicians in our class but they can’t show what they can do because we are still only playing things with three notes. There are boys in our class who are really passionate about instruments that are only allowed to be played some of the time. If someone wants to learn a certain instrument they should be allowed to learn that certain instrument.

I realize that this could not happen due to things like lack of staff and scheduling time but I really believe things like this could benefit the marks that come out of this school and will push kids to do well in their schooling career.
