Kokrak takes lead, Spieth out

-

— Jason Kokrak birdied all the par 5s at Riviera and shot a 7-under 64 to build a one-shot lead over Chez Reavie going into the weekend at the Northern Trust Open.

There was plenty of power at the top besides Kokrak, who has never won on the PGA Tour.

Dustin Johnson had a 66 and Bubba Watson played bogey-free in his round of 68. They were two shots behind. Johnson has been runner-up the last two years. Watson won two years ago.

Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama were four behind.

The weekend will not include Jordan Spieth. He shot 68 and missed the cut by five shots.

Spieth, the No. 1 player in the world, opened with a 79 and knew he would have needed something in the low 60s to have a chance of making the cut. He made it hard on himself with two early bogeys, then ran off four straight birdies around the turn to get within range. But he made bogey on No. 2 with a poor iron shot to end any realistic chance. Spieth made eight birdies in a round of 68 and missed by at least four shots.

“Coming into the day, the hard part is trying to make enough birdies, and I did that,” Spieth said. “Just too many mistakes.”

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., is the top Canadian after shooting a 3-under 68. He’s 4 under for the tournament, good for 22nd place. Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin is 2 under after shooting 70 on Friday. Meanwhile, Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., and David Hearn, from Brantford, missed the cut.

Johnson lost in a three-man playoff a year ago, and before that finished second to Watson.
