Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr top earner
Salary, benefits and expenses outlined in recent report
Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr earned $223,058 in salaries, benefits and expenses last year, according to recently released regional documents.
Carr, who has been the regional chair since 2006, received $212,386 in salary and benefits, $6,663 in conference expenses and $4,009 in car mileage and other expenses in 2015.
Among the other 20 members of regional councillors, Halton Hills Coun. Clark Somerville was the biggest earner at $76,101 — $54,738 in salary and benefits, $20,150 in conference expenses and $1,213 in car mileage and other expenses. His conference expenses are related to his duties as the Halton representative and 1st vice-president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Somerville is a member of FCM’s board of directors, FCM Rural Forum, the Ontario Caucus and other standing committees.
Milton Coun. Colin Best earned $64,501 — $54,969 in salaries and benefits, $8,582 in conference expenses and $950 in car mileage and other expenses. Of those conference expenses, $6,147 are related to Best’s duties as Halton’s representative of the Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO).
Burlington Coun. Jack Dennison earned the least with a total of $48,727 — $48,202 in salaries and benefits and $525 in car mileage and other expenses.
Other regional councillors earned between $50,000 and $62,000. The regional document does not include what politicians earn at the local area municipality where they are also remunerated.
The report detailed the remuneration and expenses of other board and committee appointees, including the Halton Regional Police Service Board. Collectively, salaries, benefits and expenses for members of the Halton Regional Police Service Board total $43,994. Members earn between $0 and $14,000.
