It’s getting crowded behind the Hamilton Bulldogs’ bench.

On Wednesday, the team announced Brampton native Vince Laise as its new assistant coach, while Ron Wilson, who served as an assistant last season, will return in his existing role. The Bulldogs are also planning to add a goalie coach to their staff, which already includes head coach John Gruden and associate coach Troy Smith.

President and general manager Steve Staios said Laise, a former assistant coach for the Erie Otters, has a strong background in development. “He’s got a real passion for the game, he’s an extremely hard worker and he’s a great addition to John and Troy.” Gruden agreed. The 33-year-old is “an up-andcoming coach who’s been around a lot of young talent the last three years in Erie,” he said. “He’s worked hard, he’s passionate, and he’s just another piece to the puzzle that we’re assembling — a really good piece.”

Laise worked with numerous NHL prospects during his stint with the Otters, including Connor McDavid, Dylan Strome and Alex DeBrincat. He also has experience as an assistant coach with the Jr. A Oakville Blades and the Jr. B Brampton Bombers.

Before he moved behind the bench, Laise notched nearly a point per game as a forward with the Milton Merchants, Bramalea Blues and Georgetown Raiders. After five seasons of Jr. A, he went on to skate for the University of Maine.

Laise also serves as the lead onice hockey skills and strength and conditioning coach at Mississauga’s Athlete Training Centre.
