Invest in trees and cut back on annuals
RE: Time to view trees as an investment (July 9)
I support the viewpoint expressed by Paul Berton in this editorial. It makes both environmental and financial sense to keep newly planted trees watered until they can establish their root systems to withstand dry spells, which will continue to increase in frequency with global warming.
I would also agree that focusing on trees rather than costly annual flower displays is a good idea. Rather than annuals, I would suggest that planting more perennial flowering bushes and trees in boulevards will not only save our cities money in the long run, but will reduce our communities’ carbon footprint as well. Increasing our tree canopy is a practical and very cost-effective strategy for combatting climate change while enhancing the beauty and livability of our cities. I would encourage municipal governments both in Hamilton and in my hometown of Burlington to shift to this approach next year during their planning and budgeting process.
