Cancer commentary a ‘real downer’

-

RE: The war on cancer has let us down (July 11)

Am I alone in finding this Comment page column to be a real ‘downer?’ The writer’s family history of cancer is sad, but to accuse the medical establishment of being gung-ho on treating a disease they know there’s no known cure for is a little much. Maybe they are gung-ho because they care? Like those who treat patients with Alzheimer’s disease, a disease for which there is no known cure?

In our family’s 14-plus year journey with Alzheimer’s, we met many compassionate, caring people in the medical profession. At the same time we were very aware of the many who were doing research to find a cure for this devastating disease. The same is happening in the cancer field. Enough of negativity.
