Crime statistics show first increase in 12 years

Statistics Canada says the number of crimes reported to police went up last year for the first time in 12 years. The crime severity index, which measures the volume of reports and how serious they are, rose five per cent in 2015. But the agency says that’s still 31 per cent lower than it was a decade ago. The overall crime rate also rose by three per cent.
