THE ASSAULTS
The assaults occurred on the forensic and schizophrenia units of the West 5th campus. These units house some of Ontario’s most delicate cases of mental illness — including patients who might otherwise be in prison were it not for their medical condition.
On Dec. 16, two nurses suffered concussions after being repeatedly punched in the head at the site’s medium-security forensic unit.
On Dec. 21, a West 5th patient bought a gun, but was turned down when he attempted to purchase ammunition, and threatened to kill a nurse.
On Dec. 23, a nurse was assaulted on a forensic unit at the West 5th Campus. Her head was slammed into the ground by a patient.
On Jan. 12, a cup of hot coffee was thrown into a nurse’s face by a patient on the medium security forensic. When the nurse attempted to push her personal alarm, it failed.
On Jan. 20, three nursing staff were assaulted, with one receiving a black eye, and another a possible concussion in the schizophrenia unit of the facility. Seven nursing staff attempted to use their personal alarms, and all of them failed.
On Feb. 3, a male nurse’s nose was broke in a violent outburst at the West 5th campus.
On July 22, a female nurse was groped and tackled in the schizophrenia unit.
