Driver pulled over by fake officer

- CARMELA FRAGOMENI

Hamilton police are warning of impersonators after a male driver posing as an officer in a car put on flashing lights and stopped a woman on a fake traffic violation.

Police are investigating the report and looking for the impostor.

A woman in her 40s was driving in the area of Miles and Airport roads at about 2:30 p.m. Friday when she saw behind her a flashing red light from what seemed like an unmarked police car — so she pulled over and stopped.

The man, who police said was wearing some kind of uniform, got out, approached the woman’s car and told her he was a police officer. He also flashed some kind of badge quickly, and then without giving a reason, demanded she get out of the car, police said.

The woman did not get out. When she said she was calling the police to verify his identity, he returned to his car and left. The woman then reported the incident to police.

The unnamed woman also posted the entire account on her Facebook page as a warning to others, but has since removed it. By then, she got almost 14,500 shares.

The police report confirms her Facebook post.

“He asked me to get out of the car,” she wrote. “It was weird and I was stunned. I asked him why he did not ask for my info and he asked me again to get out of car … I asked him to show me his badge and he flashed a badge at me but I did not see the numbers and so I asked him for the number. He again asked me to please get out of my car. I told him I was gonna call 911 and see if he was legit. He walked to his car and took off …”

The woman could not be reached for further comment.

Police are looking for an older black or blue Ford Crown Victoria with black rims, and a white male in his late 40s to early 50s, with a muscular build, between six feet and six-foot-two inches tall. He is bald, with a shiny head, a brown-grey

goatee and a deep voice.

He wore a short-sleeved shirt with shoulder flashes and badge of some kind. He also wore dark pants, without the red police stripe, and some kind of holster, police said.
