Name: Ryan Castelli

Age: 38

Position: Owner, Ryan Castelli Homes

Job description: I’m a general contractor/builder and project manager. I work with my clients and channel their visions into reality with the help of my team of trades, designers and suppliers. We realize their dream home project from inception to completion.

Is this the job you thought you’d be doing?

No, not originally. This line of work has been in my family, but I had aspirations in different fields. However, an opportunity arose to work for someone in the building industry on some inspiring and challenging projects. After “mentoring” for several years under this person, I decided it was time to step out on my own. If you are open to them, chance opportunities can help change and shape your career.

Advice to others on launching a career:

Talent is necessary but not paramount to achieving your goals. Perseverance, drive and especially resilience can have more of an impact then talent, intelligence or even education. Also, ensure topquality service to your client throughout the entire process. Positive word of mouth from a satisfied customer can be your best sales force and will help your new business grow immeasurably. A satisfied customer is a powerful asset.

Roots: I was born and raised in Hamilton. I attended McMaster business school. I’ve lived all over the city, including Stoney Creek, Waterdown, Ancaster, Hamilton Mountain and downtown. I now live with my wife and children in Dundas.

iPhone, Android or BB? iPhone.

Favourite restaurant in the downtown: Old school, Bronzie’s. New school, Aberdeen Tavern.

Best feature of life in Hamilton:

We have big-city infrastructure with a small-town feel. Also, Hamilton is full of hardworking, friendly and down-to-earth people.

What would make Hamilton a better city:

A stronger connection to our world-class geography would make it better. Nestled between the escarpment and the lake, we have a unique opportunity to make Hamilton a coveted place to live in this country. Well-planned and tasteful development of our waterfront would be an excellent start.

Let’s start making people look envious when driving over the Skyway and looking at our city!
